111. O Spirit of the Martyrs, Waken!

1. O spirit of the martyrs, waken!
A watch upon the temple towers place,
Who e’er proclaims God’s Word unshaken,
And boldly go the enemy to face:
O may their call to every nation ring
And many souls unto salvation bring!

2. Is that true flame no longer burning?
Is that first love now grown completely cold?
Does no one have the Spirit’s yearning
To bring the souls to Christ and to His fold?
Where is the martyr spirit, where the zeal?
Has selfishness now smothered Christ’s appeal?

3. O that this fire may soon be glowing,
That all may be inflamed with courage due!
That all the world may soon be knowing,
They blood along can bring salvation true!
O Savior-King, hear Thou our childlike prayer,
Thine “Amen” speak: “It shall be done!” declare.

4. In Holy Scriptures Thou hast spoken
And promised shepherds after Thine own heart;
Thy Word has never yet been broken;
We know Thou wilt fulfill it, - true Thou art!
Son will all enemies give up the field –
Thou art and ever shalt be Christ Revealed!
