109. Were God Not With Us In These Days

1. Were God not with us in these days,
To guide and cheer and calm us;
Were God not with us in there days,
Despair would overwhelm us;
For we are but a remnant small,
Held in contempt and scorn by all,
Despised and persecuted.

2. Their furious wrath did God permit,
Would surely have consumed us;
And in the deep and yawning pit
With life and limb entombed us;
For unbelief doth rise and grow,
Like streams that do their banks o’erflow,
And deal out great destruction.

3. All praise to God, who from the pit,
Snatched us, when it was gaping,
Our souls, like birds that break the net,
To heaven’s blue escaping;
Rejoice in Him, who set us free!
Our help is ever, Lord, in Thee,
The God of earth and heaven!
